FoAM will host the Brussels meeting of The Long Now Foundation, whose aim is "to creatively foster long-term thinking and responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years."
Our monthly discussion about long term thinking begins with a look at Ed Moses' recent talk on the National Ignition Facility (based at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the USA) and the ongoing effort to achieve fusion power generation. It's a promising area of scientific exploration. Obviously having viable alternatives to fossil fuels in the near-term is critical. Trouble is that wind, solar, etc. are presently quite capital-intensive and difficult to scale. Fusion is promising, (if it proves to be achievable).
