THE MAKING AND REMAKING OF SAINTS AND VENERATIVE PLACES
A Resilients' workshop on Otok Rab, Croatia
by Pollinators (Performing Pictures, nadine, FoAM AMS)

The Pollinators are a part of a growing network of cultural practitioners, with their core in the Resilients project. 'Resilients' are people of all ages preparing for uncertain futures, by experimenting with resilient forms living & working as a form of artistic practice.

In order to prepare for their 2012 green-powered pilgrimage tour, the Pollinators are gathering for the MAKING AND REMAKING OF SAINTS AND VENERATIVE PLACES workshop on Rab. The workshop includes a public program, and we invite students, cultural workers and the interested public to take part in the open program.

KINETIC CHAPEL NO. 1
During the weeklong workshop, we are building a kinetic chapel – a chapel featuring an animated saint. The chapel will probably be the first of its kind running on solar-energy. The animation is a specially developed stop-motion technique using sequences of film negatives exposed through a large-format pinhole camera.
Anyone interested in taking part in the chapel building workshop is welcome to join in between 10 am and 2 pm during the period of 10-15 September. (Palit, iznad skladišta Rab-komerc). The workshop is held in Croatian and English.

KAMPOR – a commemorative place

Kampor, Monday 12th of September 16.00

Ivo Barić, historian, professor and author on several books about the history of Rab, will make a guided tour and lecture on the Italian concentration camp on Rab. The camp was established in July 1942 and it soon became known for its appalling conditions, which caused the deaths of numerous inmates. The tour is held in Croatian with English translation.

What is a map? What is a journey? What is a sacred place? What is a pilgrim?
These are some of the initial questions the Pollinators are asking while preparing their 2012 green-powered bike odyssé through Europe. In a 2 hour long open film program we seek inspiration in relation to these questions.

Halikonlahti Green Art is a collection of art exhibits which winds round the Bay of Halikko. The 2011 festival is the third of a series of 3 exhibitions exploring Art and Ecology in the Baltic Sea Region, focusing mainly on the aspects of landuse, energy, production, nutrition, waste and politics.

FoAM is participating with 2 art-works and 1 worklab.

In the installation "It is so dark inside the hive", by Christina Stadlbauer, an osmatic auditorium connects the human senses with the world of insects. The work is based on investigations and experimentations with honeybees. In the installation Christina uses mainly wax as concentrated medium to trigger our oldest, most primal sense proposing an unusual multi-sensorial visit.

'Phoefarium' -a Temporary 'Lapidarium' of "PhoEf"- by Bartaku contains sketches, video, ongoing experiments and photographs inspired by the increasingly intimate entanglement of mind and body with the transformations of light into electrical-, nutritional- and human energy. The works are micro-interventions, fragments of Bartaku's artistic research driven narrative "PhoEf: the undisclosed poésis of the photovoltaic effect'.

Bartaku is also directing 'Temporary photoElectric Digestopians [TpED] Worklab #7 as part of a series of
co-creation worklabs in which the participants/creators are invited to reenact and build upon the 'events' leading up to the occurence of photoelectric bites on October 20, 2010 in Brussels [Be].

Alternate Reality Games: tutorial

FoAM in Brussels hosts a two-day tutorial on creating Alternate Reality Games, facilitated by Adrian Hon & Matt Wieteska of Six to Start.

Rocketboat Day promises a blend of backyard naval architecture and rocket science.

Rocketboat Day 1 is to be a participatory event where people build little boats, power them with rocket engines and race them to see which one gets the furthest. The inaugural event will take place on a nice, calm bit of water somewhere in Brussels. Let's find out what happens when you attach a C6 model rocket engine to a boat made out of anything you can get your hands on. The cool breeze off the water will blow the sweet acrid smoke across your face like a lovers caress.

On the 27th of April, Palm Top Theatre exhibition travelled to the new location of EMAF festival. Together with other two artworks, 'Immanentia', was selected to be part of European Media Art Festival in Osnabrueck, Germany
The EMAF is one of the most important forums of international Media Art, and is an open laboratory for creative and artistic experiments that help shape media and the aesthetics of their content.

Immanentia – a palm top theatre piece

The dream life has always been there. Mere shapes ever so clear and distinct. It is as if her little mind invented these shapes, labyrinths of the mind and for the mind - to drift away and try to lose oneself in - even though the mind cannot entirely trick itself. She always finds her way back. Abandonment. Mirroring. Pealing the thin layers of an onion, which in turn ends up as the perfect metaphor for the cluster of will, attention and dreams that we call consciousness. Sliding and hopping between different layers, she will perform together with you; a choreography, a game with no end and a music piece assembled into a sublime instrument to be played out by the sensitive user.
The Patabotany drawings of phantasmagoric trees and plants which intertangle and interdepend on each other, becomes a daydream world for a little girl who was found at the doorstep of a children's house in Rose Cottage Home in Dickleburgh around 1890. She carried all of her worldly possessions with her– clutching only 'a chestnut and a penny'. Picture courtesy of The Children's Society, UK.

The artworks was created for a special interface called i3DG, that turns 2D into 3D on iPhones, iPods and iPads - in the palm of your hand.

The March Long Now Brussels meetup will take place Wednesday 23 March 02011 at 19:00 at FoAM Belgium. (Please note the scheduling change!)

We'll be checking out Rachel Sussman's Long Now talk entitled ?The World's Oldest Living Organisms?. Rachel Sussman is a photographer whose works have been showcased throughout Europe and North America. (Perhaps you've seen some of her work already.) Her project has carried her around the world to document ancient lifeforms.

In her 02010 talk at TED Global in Oxford she summarized her project thusly:

"The project is part art and part science. There's an environmental component. And I'm also trying to create a means in which to step outside our quotidian experience of time and to start to consider a deeper timescale. I selected 2,000 years as my minimum age because I wanted to start at what we consider to be year zero and work back from there."

RadioMUS-E – Lunch with Insects

On March 1st 2011, two school classes visit FoAM to broadcast their radio-programme and investigate edible insects.

In RADIOMUS-E children of elementary class develop and produce a radio-transmission based on the Flemish classic 'Erik of het klein insektenboek' by Godfried Bomans. Following two months of work with Elias Vervecken (bruitage) en Rebecca Lenaerts (theatre, radiostories), two classes from two Brussels' schools (De Wimpel, Elsene and St-Joris, Brussels), get a chance to meet each other on the 1st of March at FoAM.

That day, the children continue their work on insects and include the aspect of taste: a lunch with insects will be prepared together. The menu features catarpillar soup, cochenille-red potato puree and a honey dessert.
The experiment will be concluded with a live radio transmission between 2pm and 3pm.

RadioMus-e is a project of MUS-E Belgium, a bilingual institution organising Art-in-School projects. Artists from various disciplines are invited to work in a school class with children and their teacher to initiate an artistic process.

The February Long Now Brussels meetup will take place Thursday 17 February 02011 at 19:00 at FoAM Belgium.

We live in an era of distant frontiers. The seas (spanning 71% of Earth's surface) might one day support permanent human settlements - but few take that distant possibility seriously. Recent exoplanet discoveries are tremendously exciting yet space remains, for all but the very few, almost unthinkable.

The 10,000 Year Clock project http://longnow.org/clock/ represents a major effort to create a sense of frontier in the time dimension. What role did frontier *space* play in driving social innovation historically? While we're all glued to this planet for the foreseeable future how might we open up frontier zones without reverting to discredited models of the past?

We'll be looking at Paul Romer's 02009 talk, "A Theory of History, with an Application" in which he makes a case for the establishment of new charter cities. While his ideas are not without controversy he makes a compelling argument. Come see for yourself!

March 10th
Bartaku hosted a co-creation 'Temporary photoElectric Digestopians'
worklab with research based experimentations on the transformation of
light energy into electric energy with food. Fusing cooking- and solar
tech and designs, the participants were working with edible materials to create ‘e-tapas’ of different aesthetics and tastes. A principal role is for the Aronia Melanocarpa (Choke/Apple berry), one of the most powerful, anti-oxidant rich berries both in terms of kJoules and
microWatts, entangled in a rich global historical narrative.

March 11th
Lina Kusaite and Dave Griffiths invited the audience to join a
seedballing workshop, with the focus on local (southern Finland) edible plants and its importance for the locale or urban environments.
Participants learned how to create clay balls by using water, clay,
compost and seeds, which were preselected based on Chokeberries (Aronia Melanocarpa) companion planting.

March 12th
FoAM has been working for a number of years on using games to strengthen the connection between plants and people. Our latest approach takes popular games such as FarmVille as inspiration, but explores what would happen if they were infused with aspects of permaculture, and where characters called “Plant Spirits” help or hinder you as you discover a world organised by companion planting.

Dave and Lina invited public to join them to design their own characters on paper that were rebuilt in the running game for them to play with. Visitors also had a chance to learn about what permaculture is, as an ancient art of assembling “guilds” of mutually beneficial plant species, as well as hints to a more general design strategy or philosophy.

March 13th
Theun Karelse member of FoAM and initiator of Boskoi was hosting
discussion on Augmented Ecology.

This discussion focused on whether there is still a private-life for
plants and animals as animals are fitted with tracking devices, web-cams and hooked up to sms services, satellites are tracking global crop development in real time, ecosystem monitoring is crowdsourced with mobile technology. This included an introduction to the local foraging scene in Helsinki by Joel Rosenberg, new developments in foraging / new media and Boskoi by Theun Karelse and Jussi Kivipuro was talking about Greenpeace's Digital Vision on a mobile media strategy for ecoactivism.
