Last year in October / November she spent 7 weeks at Kufunda Learning Village in Zimbabwe - a place whose mission is to inspire the co-creation of strong life affirming communities in Zimbabwe and beyond by demonstrating and sharing the necessary ideas, skills and practices that are required for community resilience and nourishment.

Kufunda has achieved resilience in a time of total systems collapse by choosing a particular approach. They engage in a wide range of small local actions that give them the capacity to continuously adapt to an unpredictable and chaotic world.
Simone will share pictures, stories and artifacts to give a taste of the rich learning she took from Kufunda.

Some background info for the curious:
on resilients:
http://x4.fo.am/resilients

on Kufunda:
http://kufunda.org/
http://www.walkoutwalkon.net/zimbabwe/
on Zimbabwe:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimbabwe
event brussels research gathering Africa Resilients Wed, 03 Aug 2011 09:01:22 +0000 christina 2007 at http://fo.am Augmented Ecology meetup #04 http://x4.fo.am/http%3A/%252Ffo.am/iforae-meetup-04

Start: 2011-03-17 19:30 GMT+2

End: 2011-03-17 20:30 GMT+2

Cross species social networks,

The forth AE-meetup takes closer look at the question: Which social media platforms will animals and plants be using? The gathering covers an outline of the project’s main goals and research approach through various studies, conceptual design and iterations and the collaboration with dancers and artists.

Kiran started his residency at FoAM on January 1st, 2011, continuing his research on 'growth'. The new node in his ongoing research is "Movementors", in which he relates to growth and form through the metaphor of movement.

Movementors functions as a question of science, engineering and design perspective where mathematical expressions from plants are decoded. It explores the world of spiral dynamics where the spirograph -an old school instrument- leads the inspiration. He relates growth of plants with an unseen mystery of movement: movement as a performance in itself. The comparison of the complex situations from static/dynamic, organic/inorganic, form/function, observer/observed and self/other brings new aesthetics to movement and transforms the space in itself. Two specific topics are explored in detail: generative growth of Spirograph mirrored in dance movements and the three dimensional Spiral movements.

The presentation will conclude with a light Indian (Kerala) Feast.

More on Kiran Ganghadaran's residency - http://x4.fo.am/residency_kiran

This residency is part of FoAm's Asia-Europe exchange program.

See also Christina Stadlbauer and Bartaku's residency at periferry 1.0 (Guwahati, India): http://www.fo.am/periferry

images: http://www.flickr.com/photos/foam/sets/72157626325858182/
event brussels research gathering Crafting design engineering generative growth geometry Mon, 28 Feb 2011 09:52:00 +0000 christina 1979 at http://fo.am Illuminating St. Catharina http://x4.fo.am/illuminating

Start: 2010-11-22 10:00 Europe/Brussels

End: 2010-11-22 13:59 Europe/Brussels

10 12-year olds visited FoAM Brussels, where FoAM people played with them and they applied FoAM practices on them.
public experiment brussels research gathering Thu, 02 Dec 2010 10:27:18 +0000 christina 1961 at http://fo.am Toegepast Research Gathering http://x4.fo.am/regather_toegepast

Start: 2010-10-08 18:00 Europe/Brussels

End: 2010-10-08 21:00 Europe/Brussels

FoAM holds a research gathering at the Design Vlaanderen Gallery, in collaboration with Toegepast: Fit to Boost! (Design Vlaanderen & Design Platform Limburg)

With:
Michaël Verheyden, Designer, Belgium
Rula Sayaf, Information Systems & Software Engineer, Syria

facilitated by Maja Kuzmanovic

Research gatherings are designed for creative practitioners to discuss their works in progress, research questions & creative processes in a casual and interactive setting. There are no formal speeches or presentations, but instead the guests are invited to share brief remarks, research questions & conceptual sketches to set the scene, followed by a conversation between the guests & the audience. The goal of Research Gatherings is to receive valuable feedback early in a creative process, in an open & non-judgmental manner. For this session an additional goal has been included – to bring together two guests from different fields & cultures, who explore interaction between tradition & innovation from different perspectives.

The main question of the Toegepast Research Gathering is "What can we learn from interaction between traditional creative disciplines (such as crafts or dance) and innovation, to make our works more sustainable?" To help answer this question, the guests present their works in progress, followed by a moderated conversation between the guests & the audience, 'lubricated' with especially designed food & drinks.

In other words, the purpose of this session is to understand each other's creative process and expected results, hearing from two Syrian artists & technologists and a Belgian designer both working on the cusp between tradition & innovation, by getting an insight into their respective perspectives & experience.

In addition to the Research Gathering, FoAM is present at the Toegepast: Fit to Boost! with a groWorld installation, as well as in the design of the food programme for "By Design for Design" and "Dream team dinners".
presentation brussels research gathering Fri, 20 Aug 2010 14:30:06 +0000 maja 1941 at http://fo.am IMG_2271 http://x4.fo.am/node/1919 brussels research gathering Research gathering with Bartaku & Christina Thu, 08 Jul 2010 14:05:39 +0000 lina 1919 at http://fo.am IMG_2269 http://x4.fo.am/node/1918 research gathering Research gathering with Bartaku & Christina Thu, 08 Jul 2010 14:05:20 +0000 lina 1918 at http://fo.am Flesh, Steel and Codecs Visual http://x4.fo.am/node/1909
Image by Eisa Jocson & Angelo Vermeulen
brussels Overview image research gathering Wed, 09 Jun 2010 15:28:37 +0000 maja 1909 at http://fo.am Research Gathering on Flesh, Steel and Codecs http://x4.fo.am/RG_10_06_flesh_steel_codecs

Start: 2010-06-18 19:00 Europe/Brussels

End: 2010-06-18 21:00 Europe/Brussels

Flesh, Steel and Codecs
Eisa Jocson & Angelo Vermeulen

During this research gathering Eisa Jocson and Angelo Vermeulen talk about recent work in which they explore notions of the body and its relation to space and technology.

Visual

Eisa Jocson presents 'Stainless Borders: The Deconstruction of Architectures of Control', a current project that merges the urban landscape and pole dancing. The project explores and maps the relationship between the human body and the urban landscape through movement defined by a pole dance vocabulary. 'Stainless Borders’ started in Manila, and has now expanded to Brussels and Sint-Niklaas. It is an alternative practice that tries to challenge perspectives towards how our bodies move within the urban landscape. Eisa Jocson is artist in residence at FoAM from May till June 2010, and is currently developing an experimental video project at SoundImageCulture in Brussels.

http://eisajocson.posterous.com

In his presentation Angelo Vermeulen talks about the latest developments in his ongoing 'Corrupted C#n#m#' project. 'Corrupted C#n#m#' is an amorphous, process-oriented art project which explores new and old media through biological and digital experimentation. Essentially, the project debunks the myth of the immateriality of digital media. For the Canvascollectie Vermeulen teamed up with jewelry designer Walter Bresseleers to create data-corrupting cyber cockroaches. The armor of these hybrid creatures contains electronics that can disrupt digital data streams. Bresseleers will briefly elucidate the potential role of silver-smithing in media arts.

http://www.angelovermeulen.net
event brussels Flesh, Steel and Codecs research gathering Wed, 02 Jun 2010 13:36:46 +0000 maja 1907 at http://fo.am Research Gathering with Foodprints http://x4.fo.am/RG_10_06_foodprints

Start: 2010-06-04 12:30 Europe/Brussels

End: 2010-06-04 13:30 Europe/Brussels

Anna Maria Orru talks about food & urban resilience over a locally sourced lunch.

About Foodprints:
‘Foodprints’ explores how the discipline of biomimicry can promote urban food resilience and opportunities for biodiversity to flourish in urban developments.

There is an inherent relationship between the city and how food arrives on our plates. Foodprints investigates how to create resilient cities that mimic nature’s ecosystems, where all the elements are interactive, abundant in feed-back loops, responsive, engaging, conducive to life, and always looking to reach the best use of resources. The goal of Foodprints will be to bring forward a food culture, inspired by these ecosystems, through creation of a biologically-centered toolkit, to be applied on the urban visions for Norra Djurgarden area of Stockholm. By creating such a tool, the project aims to be long term, continuous and inviting, applicable to other future schemes. Foodprints threads together scientific, futuristic, artistic and sensory perspectives to review our urban ecology and the way we feed ourselves. Food will become our communication device, and we will present our explorations in a ‘maltid’ designed around the senses and experience.

More: http://locust.fo.am/foodprints/

About Anna Maria:
Anna Maria Orru is the creator of SCENE-thinking, and an agent inspiring Biomimicry through initiatives such as the Bioinspired forum.
