Radio Mycelium tutorial includes the construction of a series of experimental situations examining a new networked imaginary, the single organism of the fungal mycelium, in relation to pathogenic, electromagnetic communications.

The mycelium, a fungal network of thread-like cells, represents a truly underground communications network, spreading out over vast areas of earth substrate, acting with ecosystem intelligence as an interface across across symbiotic networks such as plant and tree roots.

PARN's Radio Mycelium tutorial aims to actively examine the cross-spore-germination between two parallel wide area networks; between radio-based communication technologies and the single organism network of the mycelium. Fungal transceivers sprouting mycelial antennas form an imaginary underground network. Diversity of human networks is mapped across fungal diversity in the urban environment. The influence of electromagnetic carrier wave on the mycelial network is to be examined.

The well-documented transformative potential of the mycelium (for example, decomposing pollutants) is invoked to remediate an increasingly pathogenic electromagnetic networked culture.

A series of experimental situations will be established and studied by participants, who will also learn how to construct simple measurement devices, and culture shiitake, pink oyster and Enokitake mushrooms, amongst other mycelium (simple moulds). A short field trip will find and map winter mushroomings of electromagnetic fungi in Brussels.

Immanentia, an interactive application, story and artwork by FoAM and Performing Pictures, is shown at the Japan Media Arts Festival in Dortmund. In Immanentia, the viewers are drawn into a world of Lina Kusaite’s patabotanical drawings of phantasmagoric trees and plants. The drawings describe a place for day-dreams of a little girl, found at the doorstep of the children's house in Rose Cottage Home in Dickleburgh around 1890. The artwork is created for a i3DG, an interface for iPhones/Pods/Pads, able to turn 2D imagery into 3D - creating a minuscule theatre-stage in the palm of your hand. i3DG is created and designed by Jitsuo Mase.

TpED Worklab at DMY Festival

A co-creation worklab with research based experimentations on the relation between light, food, body and electric energy. Fusing cooking- and solar technology and designs, the participants can improvise and play with edible materials to create ‘e-tapas’ of different aesthetics, smells and tastes. To be ta(e)sted on the heliotropic tongue for the tickle. Lead by Bartaku / FoAM.

TpED #5 was part of FoAM's groWorld, presented at Pixelache Helsinki. At DMY the TpED-worklab is part of 'Makerlab Finland'.

Middle Kingdom of Weeds festival

Be part of mapping the energetic value of the Dutch urban landscape; how much energy does it take for semi-skilled contemporary foragers to gather wild foods and what energetic value is contained in nearby urban environments? On May 8th the Middle Kingdom of Weeds festival features a forage psychogeographic expedition that will starts at 10.30 from Station Sloterdijk, Amsterdam. Using .walk algorithms this foraging expedition will map and explore the caloric potential of the area.

Team members include:
- a geographer, who maps the edibles on Boskoi
- a timekeeper, who maps the times spent walking and harvesting
- spotters and harvesters

On return the wild foods will be weighed to make a calculation of the energy harvested in the expedition.

On the basis of this a map is made of the caloric value along the walk, the energy budget of the group and the best foraging algorithms.

This expedition is open to all.

Dave Griffiths presents FoAM

Dave will talk about FoAM, who are bringing their Groworld Bazaar to Pixelache in March. He will give more context and background to this project as well as revealing other related and not so related work that FoAM has been developing in recent years. As well as explaining FoAM’s work in connecting plants and people, the talk will include cooking recipes, livecoding, robot cats playing chess, and demos of prototype computer games.

FoAM Amsterdam is initiating the Institute for Augmented Ecology (IforAE). This is a continuation of the work on Boskoi (an Android mobile foraging application, which is in development).

Launch of CD/DVD of 'The Sound of Gesture', by Stevie Wishart.

"In everyday life we look without seeing, hear without listening: when a car passes we think “car” - we may not even notice what colour it is or pause to identify its engine from the engine sound. In life we concentrate on the basics in order to get along. As a composer and performer I want my audience to immerse themselves in the world of sounds I have carefully constructed. In the Sound of Gesture I hope that my musical gestures (those engaged in the act of playing the violin) will engage the audience, to lead them towards the various electronic transformations of the violin-sound as they emerge in the soundscape. Just as a pianist builds anticipation when lifting a hand before bringing it down onto the keyboard, so my visible gestures - themselves triggers to the sounds that accompany or follow - encourage the audience to expect what comes next and to notice when it happens. The Sound of Gesture is all about intensifying the listening experience."

“The Sound of Gesture” is part of Guild for Reality Integrators and Generators. It is a guild for European cultural and academic operators gathered around a mutual purpose; to mix separate realities, as well as bring whole new realities into existence.

As autumn ripens, nature and its resources are slowly turning inwards, preparing for the seasonal rest.

This is a good time for various works in the city gardens - preparing plants and soil for the winter, harvesting the yield of the year and planning next steps for the coming spring.

As we all share the enthusiasm about growing edible greenery in our surroundings. To celebrate both the plants & their urban cultivators, FoAM and nadine invited urban gardening experts, beginners & enthusiasts alike, to sit around a table, overflowing with autumn goodness, to share experiences, challenges and discoveries.

The Autumn Harvest Dinner is an informal gathering for plant-enthusiasts from the Brussels region. A potlach meal, where everyone brings their harvest - raw or cooked, so we not only share our knowledge but also taste its fruits.

For those so inclined, there is a joint cookup in the afternoon.

FoAM presents groWorld at the 7th edition of SEAFair “The apparatus of life and death”. The fastival creatively responds to the evolution of society in the sphere of bio-politics, thereby visualizing of our possible futures. SEAFair 2010 conveys the story of artists, critics and theorists attempting to navigate through the maze of the newly constructed global bio-political apparatus, in a changing social matrix, in which the rules are just being set. The artists in the exhibition "The apparatus of life and death" present an array of approaches — from the humorous and playful to the deadly serious — regarding the way we think about the origins of life, the scale and dimensions of living matter, to relationships with nourishment, death, fashion and appearance.

Workshop Guerilla Gardening: Seedbombs

In collaboration with FoAM, Recyclart is organising a seed-bombing workshop.

Analogous to kneading of dough, the participants learn how to create a fertile paste including thousands of seeds (herbs, bushes, shrubs & ground covers), that can work together to form a self-sustaining plant guild. Recyclart invites people of all ages to discover the urban ecologists in themselves.

The workshop will be repeated on the 16th of July and 5th of August.

Seedballing at Micronomics

Klorofil, OKNO and FoAM work together on a seedballing workshop in Brussels, as a part of the Micronomics Festival.

Since 2006, City Mine(d) devote themselves to the issue of economic paradoxes in Brussels. Under the banner Micronomics, they look for answers at the micro scale. They have brought together a wealth of micro-initiatives, who are actively building an urban micro-economy that is fair to those who take part in it and that is at the heart of the way our cities are shaped.

During the 2010 Micronomics festival, Klorofil, FoAM and OKNO join forces to spread the green virus in the city. In a collaborative action they organize seed-balling workshops, construct small vertical gardens and give all information on how to grow your own vegetables on the tiniest spaces in the city
