In order to increase personal resilience of people working in the cultural sector, FoAM has a coaching programme, in collaboration with Vali Lalioti (http://valilalioti.com).

Coaching is a powerful process that helps people achieve their full potential. It is a safe and non-judgmental partnership that uses trust and belief in people's own abilities to empower the coachee to find their own solutions to achieving their objectives.

At FoAM, people can apply for 4-6 individual coaching sessions. The Coach guides the sessions through active listening, powerful questioning and reflecting back. This includes challenging assumptions and existing thought patterns, acting as a catalyst for new thinking. Coaching is also fun, creative and gives the coachee a positive and empowering view of the future.

Coaching is not about offering advice or solutions to particular problems or career challenges. The focus is on helping people draw out their own best-fit solutions to achieving their goals and identifying any tools that help them do this.

Coaching is not based on analysis of the past or the influences that formed people's character. It is the process of guiding the coachee to identify their own solutions to the challenges they face and focuses on their future.

Resilients Naikan

"Naikan is a method of intensive self-reflection that can lead to more inner freedom and joy. A week of Naikan allows you to examine your view on life by observing your inner world, calmly, in a completely safe space. The silence and withdrawal enable a deep, meditative and emotionally intense experience, by which self-perception can be re-calibrated and a fresh view on our life story can take place."

At FoAM we will use Naikan in the Future Preparedness case study of the Resilients project. Our hypothesis is that individual introspection, when done with a whole collective, in their common work-space might increase the effectiveness of the group's collaboration, communication and effectiveness, making them overall more resilient. We work with Helga Hartl as the guide during the retreat and Alkan Chipperfield as the anthropologist, who examines our hypothesis post-retreat. Ten Naikan participants come from FoAM Brussels & Amsterdam, as well as our wider network of collaborators.

The Guild for Reality Integrators and Generators (gRig)

gRig is a guild for European cultural and academic operators gathered around a mutual purpose; to mix separate realities, as well as bring whole new realities into existence.

Guild’s members are committed to research and create meaningful situations in hybrid (or mixed) reality, where digital media and physical materials, objects and spaces are increasingly intertwined. Most reality generation and integration tends to happen on the edges of knowledge-fields, where different perspectives and approaches can be synthesized into hybrid forms of creative expression.

It is on these fuzzy edges that experimental technology and contemporary culture truly amplify each other’s potentials. We have found these edges to be the most fertile ground for innovative social and cultural advances, in which the vast knowledge of the Guild for Reality Integrators and Generators can be best called into service.

In a not so distant future, digital technologies will become seamlessly woven into the fabric of daily life. Technologies able to adapt to different situations, be aware of each other and can even be considered companions. Already today, we can see unprecedented forms of communication, presence and expression emerging on the edges between physical and digital worlds.

The technologies for mixing realities are becoming increasingly accessible and available. The people of today have the ability to steer their future deployment. It is in this crucial time that the Guild for Reality Integrators and Generators (gRig) has begun to make its activities and membership more widely known.

In FoAM's studio in Brussels, we collect books, media and materials related to our activites and interests. In our multi-sensory library, visitors may read, view, listen and touch snippets of the culture that FoAM's collaborators cherish. The most traditional part of the library is our hard-copy section including books, magazines, zines and pamphlets. It is an eclectic collection of scientific and philosophical texts, artistic anthologies, richly illustrated design books, software manuals and recipe collections, futuristic science-fiction, or even obscure facsimilies of alchemical manuscripts and botanical guides.

Having worked in the new media field over the years, we have collected a small selection of contemporary digital audiovisual works – DVDs, CDs (and even a few CD-ROMs), containing experimental films, abstract computer-graphics, compositions, electronic and computer music, generative animation, artistic portfolios and other curiosa.

Our latest addition to the library is a rarity cabinet of material samples – textiles, plastics, composites, active materials, etc. Visitors can browse through the samples, or through books about new materials, as well as consult manufacturers' brochures. This materials library is the only one in Belgium freely accessible to artists and designers seeking inspiration and information in this domain. The library and it's adjacent working space offers a place for concentrated work, providing researchers a much needed break from fast-paced professional life. It is accessible by appointment only, one person or small group at the time, allowing visitors to concetrate on their studies, without distractions.
