During the Days of Sustainability (10-14 October 2011), the Flemish Government invites FoAM to host a debate lunch about the future of food - Voedsel 2.0.

The format of this "open sauce world cafe lunch", is an exploration of a facilitated discussion paired with the open sauce concept.
After an introductory talk by Maja Kuzmanovich on alternative food, a three course menu will be served to the participants. The dishes are created to match the discussions, using taste, texture, scent, temperature and colour to encourage the conversations.
The discussions will revolve around topics of food-waste, the health aspects of food and transitions in foodculture resulting in change of behaviour.

Simone is a journeyer of the Resilients Guild. Last year in October / November she spent 7 weeks at Kufunda Learning Village in Zimbabwe - a place whose mission is to inspire the co-creation of strong life affirming communities in Zimbabwe and beyond by demonstrating and sharing the necessary ideas, skills and practices that are required for community resilience and nourishment.

Kufunda has achieved resilience in a time of total systems collapse by choosing a particular approach. They engage in a wide range of small local actions that give them the capacity to continuously adapt to an unpredictable and chaotic world.
Simone will share pictures, stories and artifacts to give a taste of the rich learning she took from Kufunda.

Rocket Boat Day #1

Rocketboat Day promises a blend of backyard naval architecture and rocket science.

Rocketboat Day 1 is to be a participatory event where people build little boats, power them with rocket engines and race them to see which one gets the furthest. The inaugural event will take place on a nice, calm bit of water somewhere in Brussels. Let's find out what happens when you attach a C6 model rocket engine to a boat made out of anything you can get your hands on. The cool breeze off the water will blow the sweet acrid smoke across your face like a lovers caress.

What do we observe?

The setting is the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. ECX is the current centre of control of the newly installed Ethiopian market system. Ethiopia today ranks n°5 in the world list of emerging countries by producing primary physical goods (commodities).

Stories, rumours and attitudes

In Ethiopia we started a series of observations, encounters and dialogues with people connected in some way or another with the new founded ECX and the Ethiopian economy. We were looking for relations between macro statements (about a country, a population, a group) and micro experience.
The Lecture Performance travels 5 fragments. They are presented in a European context. The presentation challenges our self-awareness and our (in)capacity to critically evaluate the things we perceive.

design your own park.

This festival is aimed at designing a public garden or park with local residents under guidance of 4 experts. The garden in question is located behind the Meester coupeur opleiding on one side and the Jan Evertsenstraat on the other side. (It is located at the same square as FoAM's edible garden.)

In 4 design sessions participants are invited to join the design process centred on 4 themes: urban farming with farmer Dirk van Berge, urban fauna with city ecologist Maarten Melchers, garden economies with Fransje de Waard and recycling / sourcing local materials with 2012 Architects. (some to be confirmed)

The March Long Now Brussels meetup will take place Wednesday 23 March 02011 at 19:00 at FoAM Belgium. (Please note the scheduling change!)

We'll be checking out Rachel Sussman's Long Now talk entitled ?The World's Oldest Living Organisms?. Rachel Sussman is a photographer whose works have been showcased throughout Europe and North America. (Perhaps you've seen some of her work already.) Her project has carried her around the world to document ancient lifeforms.

In her 02010 talk at TED Global in Oxford she summarized her project thusly:

"The project is part art and part science. There's an environmental component. And I'm also trying to create a means in which to step outside our quotidian experience of time and to start to consider a deeper timescale. I selected 2,000 years as my minimum age because I wanted to start at what we consider to be year zero and work back from there."

Research Gathering with Kiran Gangadharan - Decode

During this research gathering Kiran Gangadharan -who has an engineering and design background- will present a round-up of Project Decode. The gathering covers an outline of the project’s main goals and research approach through various studies, conceptual design and iterations and the collaboration with dancers and artists.

Kiran started his residency at FoAM on January 1st, 2011, continuing his research on 'growth'. The new node in his ongoing research is "Movementors", in which he relates to growth and form through the metaphor of movement.

Movementors functions as a question of science, engineering and design perspective where mathematical expressions from plants are decoded. It explores the world of spiral dynamics where the spirograph -an old school instrument- leads the inspiration. He relates growth of plants with an unseen mystery of movement: movement as a performance in itself. The comparison of the complex situations from static/dynamic, organic/inorganic, form/function, observer/observed and self/other brings new aesthetics to movement and transforms the space in itself. Two specific topics are explored in detail: generative growth of Spirograph mirrored in dance movements and the three dimensional Spiral movements.

The presentation will conclude with a light Indian (Kerala) Feast.

The corporate battle over SmartCities has shifted last December to a race to dominance over monitoring our ecosytems.

RadioMUS-E – Lunch with Insects

On March 1st 2011, two school classes visit FoAM to broadcast their radio-programme and investigate edible insects.

In RADIOMUS-E children of elementary class develop and produce a radio-transmission based on the Flemish classic 'Erik of het klein insektenboek' by Godfried Bomans. Following two months of work with Elias Vervecken (bruitage) en Rebecca Lenaerts (theatre, radiostories), two classes from two Brussels' schools (De Wimpel, Elsene and St-Joris, Brussels), get a chance to meet each other on the 1st of March at FoAM.

That day, the children continue their work on insects and include the aspect of taste: a lunch with insects will be prepared together. The menu features catarpillar soup, cochenille-red potato puree and a honey dessert.
The experiment will be concluded with a live radio transmission between 2pm and 3pm.

RadioMus-e is a project of MUS-E Belgium, a bilingual institution organising Art-in-School projects. Artists from various disciplines are invited to work in a school class with children and their teacher to initiate an artistic process.

Long Now Brussels meetup - February 02011

The February Long Now Brussels meetup will take place Thursday 17 February 02011 at 19:00 at FoAM Belgium.

We live in an era of distant frontiers. The seas (spanning 71% of Earth's surface) might one day support permanent human settlements - but few take that distant possibility seriously. Recent exoplanet discoveries are tremendously exciting yet space remains, for all but the very few, almost unthinkable.

The 10,000 Year Clock project http://longnow.org/clock/ represents a major effort to create a sense of frontier in the time dimension. What role did frontier *space* play in driving social innovation historically? While we're all glued to this planet for the foreseeable future how might we open up frontier zones without reverting to discredited models of the past?

We'll be looking at Paul Romer's 02009 talk, "A Theory of History, with an Application" in which he makes a case for the establishment of new charter cities. While his ideas are not without controversy he makes a compelling argument. Come see for yourself!

FoAM is located at Koolmijnenkaai 30-34. (Detailed directions are available here http://x4.fo.am/contact.) Basically, it's a 2-3 minute walk from the Comte de Flandre metro stop.
