The Mushroom Speaks

The mycelium, a fungal network of thread-like cells, represents a truly underground communications network, spreading out over vast areas of earth substrate, acting with ecosystem intelligence as an interface across across symbiotic networks such as plant and tree roots.

PARN's Radio Mycelium tutorial aims to actively examine the cross-spore-germination between two parallel wide area networks; between radio-based communication technologies and the single organism network of the mycelium. Fungal transceivers sprouting mycelial antennas form an imaginary underground network. Diversity of human networks is mapped across fungal diversity in the urban environment. The influence of electromagnetic carrier wave on the mycelial network is to be examined.

The well-documented transformative potential of the mycelium (for example, decomposing pollutants) is invoked to remediate an increasingly pathogenic electromagnetic networked culture.

A series of experimental situations will be established and studied by participants, who will also learn how to construct simple measurement devices, and culture shiitake, pink oyster and Enokitake mushrooms, amongst other mycelium (simple moulds). A short field trip will find and map winter mushroomings of electromagnetic fungi in Brussels.

The workshop is facilitated by Martin Howse: http://www.1010.co.uk/org/

This tutorial is a part of PARN: http://x4.fo.am/parn

--

Supported by the Flemish Authorities and Culture 2007 - 2013 Programme of the European Commission.
workshop brussels sym sys xmedk Mon, 03 Oct 2011 13:59:24 +0000 maja 2019 at http://fo.am Immanentia 04 http://x4.fo.am/immanentia04

Start: 2011-09-10 00:00 GMT+2

End: 2011-10-02 00:00 GMT+2

Immanentia, an interactive application, story and artwork by FoAM and Performing Pictures, is shown at the Japan Media Arts Festival in Dortmund. In Immanentia, the viewers are drawn into a world of Lina Kusaite’s patabotanical drawings of phantasmagoric trees and plants. The drawings describe a place for day-dreams of a little girl, found at the doorstep of the children's house in Rose Cottage Home in Dickleburgh around 1890. The artwork is created for a i3DG, an interface for iPhones/Pods/Pads, able to turn 2D imagery into 3D - creating a minuscule theatre-stage in the palm of your hand. i3DG is created and designed by Jitsuo Mase.

More about the festival:

http://dortmund.bunka-jmaf.jp/?lang=en
exhibition brussels sym xmedk Tue, 30 Aug 2011 16:09:10 +0000 maja 2016 at http://fo.am Immanentia03 http://x4.fo.am/Immanentia03

Start: 2011-06-07 19:30 GMT+2

End: 2011-09-18 19:30 GMT+2

Immanentia @ Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities exhibition, in MAD (museum of arts and design ) in N.Y.
June 7 - September 18, 2011

Performing Pictures and FoAM – once again have been invited to be part of exhibition, and this time - as part of the worlds of "magic realism" of Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities at the MAD museum in N.Y.

Virtual reality has been a powerful factor in shaping our social and artistic environment since the 1970s.
Today, innovations in digital technology have completely transformed film, video, and television: extraordinary special effects and three-dimensional imaging created using computer-based software are commonplace.
Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities illuminates the phenomenal renaissance of interest among artists worldwide in constructing small-scale hand built depictions of artificial environments and alternative realities, either as sculpture or as subjects for photography and video.

Immanentia – a palm top theatre piece
The dream life has always been there. Mere shapes ever so clear and distinct. It is as if her little mind invented these shapes, labyrinths of the mind and for the mind - to drift away and try to lose oneself in - even though the mind cannot entirely trick itself. She always finds her way back. Abandonment. Mirroring. Pealing the thin layers of an onion, which in turn ends up as the perfect metaphor for the cluster of will, attention and dreams that we call consciousness. Sliding and hopping between different layers, she will perform together with you; a choreography, a game with no end and a music piece assembled into a sublime instrument to be played out by the sensitive user.
The Patabotany drawings of phantasmagoric trees and plants which intertangle and interdepend on each other, becomes a daydream world for a little girl who was found at the doorstep of a children's house in Rose Cottage Home in Dickleburgh around 1890. She carried all of her worldly possessions with her– clutching only 'a chestnut and a penny'. It is about transforming cultural experiences, informed and inspired by biological and ecological systems.

sym projects: groworld game, germination x

sym looks at emergence, diversity, resilience and other properties of Earth-bound systems, to develop a deeper connection between human societies and the rest of the planet. To begin with, sym aims to encourage a stronger connection between contemporary cultural experiences and plant life; in physical, hybrid and cybernetic realities. Within sym, creative practitioners from all walks of life work together to imagine and bring about a greener contemporary culture. We collect and collate knowledge that can enable us to develop the vegetal side of our minds. We weave stories and draw possible futures. Then we rehearse them through play and games, hands-on experiments, generative media and responsive environments. We bring food and food-related systems back into the focus of cultural experiences. We craft biomimetic and biomorphic structures with biodegradable, found and living materials. We make, but also unmake. We design experiences that can be consumed, subsumed and absorbed, in all stages of their lifecycles. Inspired by the necessary process of hibernation, sym sometimes involves doing absolutely nothing.
production brussels burning man 2000 sym Entangling Playing Thu, 27 Mar 2008 20:48:40 +0000 _pix 90 at http://fo.am
