The experimental research, a day to day quest, became the core of a residency at periferry - governmental, non-functional ferry for crossing the Brahmaputra and unique, interdisciplinary platform for artists and similar breeds. Numerous arranged and accidental encounters with local wells of knowledge, adventurous purchasing at Ulan and Pan Bazaar, and visits of nurseries and botanical gardens resulted in a peripheral archive of medicinal plants cum interactive lunch preparations - and moving images.

----------------------

Bartaku: A SLOW FLOW
A residency at periferry 1.0, fused by:

The ferry, a redundant icon of the fossil fuel era, the Brahmaputra river with its highly energetic currents, fed by the mighty mountains up North; the growing multi-tribal city of Guwahati where the wild edible power plants rich soil is eaten by concrete buildings; the Indian Institute of Technology, exclusive residence of the chosen ones; and especially, the giraffe of the Zoo-cum-Botanical garden. A residency that evolved into the elaboration of PhoEf*-narratives, embodied by micro-interventions, a workshop and an essay.

----------------------

About Periferry 1.0

"The "Periferry1.0 " project is an alternative space that works as an incubator for transforming cultural productions. The project is designed to link together the cultural energies of the Northeast India with other parts of South and Southeast Asia and the world. It is a laboratory for people engaged in hybrid practices, people whose knowledge tends to fall through gaps between disciplines, people who thrive in the interstitial spaces between art, culture and science, technology and ecology.
The project focuses on the creation of a network space for negotiating the challenge of contemporary cultural production. PhoEf emerged from a personal, transversal flight through the interconnected worlds behind and around photovoltaics; a technology based on A.E. Becquerel's 1839 observation of the photovoltaic effect. PhoEf is embedded in a rich, multidisciplinary, historical context.

In progress: http://libarynth.org/luminous/phoef
residency brussels dynamics green translocal xmedk Greening Thu, 19 Jun 2008 18:36:31 +0000 maja 1372 at http://fo.am Sanjeev Shankar: RUrban Permaculture http://x4.fo.am/node/1370
This project explores aspects of human environment, its relation with ecology and our attempt to encourage more sustainable growth. The relevant fields of inquiry are urban ecology, sustainability, human plant interaction and biomorphism. The research explores ways in which we can transform our cities into productive, healthy, edible and playful green visions. In recent years there has been a growing public movement to bring ecology into urban environments where many people spend most of their time. However, people are still grappling with the problem of a balance between 'growth' and conservation. This problem is not limited to emerging cities in the developing world. The thrust of this research is to explore methods to initiate collective public action in this direction.

In progress: http://libarynth.org/research_report_sanjeev-shankar
residency brussels green grig nourish translocal Thu, 19 Jun 2008 18:27:42 +0000 maja 1370 at http://fo.am Theun Karelse: Tsunamipants http://x4.fo.am/node/1366
How do you relate to global crises in a way that is not demotivating? The discussion about our future is dominated by appeals for austerity and reduction. This is not a very inspiring message as it focuses on negative aspects of society. It is hard to see a positive revolution on a global scale, based on negative arguments. Instead we should focus on positive changes that inspire everyone. This debate should be dominated by the possibility of increasing the quality of life.

The Tsunamipants project shows the traps that are hidden in responding to problems by coming up with solutions that are built within the limits of the problem. This invariably creates new versions of the same problem, it doesn't solve them. That is the tragedy in which the inventor Martin Brolin is caught in Tsunamipants. Martin engages the extreme weather conditions that are associated with future climate changes and tries to engineer his way out-off danger. In his work Mr. Brolin suffers from lack of expertise, lack of budged, oversized ambition and being over-all mediocre. These are common human traits that run beneath the surface of positive social change. To be able to construct anything realistically and therefor longlasting, I suggest we start by acknowledging that there is nothing inherently wrong with being mediocre. I realise that this goes against giant forces in popular culture, but Martin is deliberately portrayed as a mediocre inventor, although I only later became fully conscious of why I was doing this.

In progress: http://libarynth.org/research_report_theun_karelse
residency amsterdam brussels green grig irreal Thu, 19 Jun 2008 18:10:42 +0000 maja 1366 at http://fo.am PhoEf – Photons and the electric kiss http://x4.fo.am/phoef_subtle_technologies

Start: 2008-05-30 13:30 Canada/Central

End: 2008-05-30 17:30 Canada/Central

PhoEf is a research project led by Bart Vandeput, exploring the essence, use and abuse of the photovoltaic effect - the conversion of light into electrical energy - within the realms of science, industry, technology and the arts.

As photovoltaics illustrate the interwovenness of matter and mankind, with the elements and the cosmos, it promises to trigger a deeper understanding of the qualities, origins and movements of light.
